Dinosaur Egg

Agatized Dinosaur Bone is a rare form of fossilized dinosaur bone that has been mineralized with agate-type compounds. Only known to occur in a few areas of the world, most of the material you see offered on this website comes from the Colorado Plateau. The building block of agate (silica oxide) is the same material that is used to make glass. It is this glassy nature and a spectrum of natural colors that distinguishes agatized dinosaur bone. As is typical of true fossils, the original structural detail of the bone is perfectly preserved.

Although Agatized Dinosaur Bone has been around for a very long time, it has only been appreciated by a few. Due to the difficulties involved in polishing it, it is only beginning to gain the recognition it deserves. It should go without saying that as this material becomes more appreciated, the price for quality work will increase significantly. The exquisite beauty of Agatized Dinosaur Bone you see on these pages can only be realized after careful sculpting and polishing by a master craftsman. After thirty plus years of specialization, I am able to offer you the very finest presentations of these ancient stones.

As with any new material in the lapidary and jewelry business, heed this warning: "Buyer Beware". It is very difficult to evaluate dinosaur bone, especially by means of a photograph. I have seen a lot of finished material offered for sale that is poorly crafted, contains numerous fractures, or is flawed by the "orange peel" effect  (a finish that is badly undercut). Some material marketed as dinosaur bone is not even dinosaur bone.

There is some nice material available, but you have to be able to discern the good from the poor. I will always offer you the finest!

A dedicated policy of ethics is followed; no material is collected from state or federal lands and no specimens are damaged in order to extract the gemstone inside. What I offer you is not just a bone, but rather a piece of history and a work of art. You are the curator of this rare, non-renewable natural resource. What you can now hold in the palm of your hand is truly the "Legacy of the Dinosaur!"

JEWELRY PIECES
Jewelry pieces are fun to work with and offer a variety of unique choices. As with all my work, only the finest material is used. A unique variety of shapes and colors are available in earrings, pendants, and brooches.

All jewelry pieces are hand polished on both sides with a thin polished girdle that separates the two halves. An exception to this are the twist forms. Twists are three or four sided pieces where each face is curved, much like a spiral staircase or helix. Twist earrings have one left-handed and one right-handed stone to make a beautifully symmetrical set.

Jewelry is mounted with a choice of gold, silver, or surgical steel. Gift cases are typically used for shipping to protect the stones.

I do work with other exotic materials, such as Australian Chrysoprase, Montana Jade, Snowflake Obsidian, Utah Agate, and many others.

These massive pendants are not for the faint of heart! Made from premier quality agatized dinosaur bone, they make a statement identifying the wearer as brave, courageous, and ahead of the game. These two beauties have already found homes, but more of this style are coming.  If you want one sooner than later, contact me!!

As a note, the green pendant is exceptionally unique.  Green bone itself is a rare color to obtain, but a piece like this one is beyond rare. The red can be reproduced, but the green will only be seen in photos.

SMALL EARRING SETS

The small earrings are polished on both sides and, like most of my other earrings, have a polished girdle (≈1mm).
The posts are surgical steel, so they are quite hypoallergenic. The ear nuts have large silicone pads for security and comfort. All earrings will be sent in a small case (pictured below), which is primarily for protection during shipment, but also makes a nice gift package.

The "Claw Pendant" is best seen from all sides, since it is not your typical cabochon shape. It has a domed front, a recurved back, and a polished girdle. This can be mounted with a silver or gold anchor ring and jump ring to go with your favorite chain. Future Claw Pendants will be made out of a variety of different bone colors.  When available, the price is $125.00.

Designated art pieces are those which have been carved into spheres, eggs or free-form shapes from the best of the best agatized (and in some cases calcified) material. Individual pieces are either carved from solid blocks or blocks created by the lamination of several smaller pieces. The laminated pieces (especially the spheres) can be engineered into a unique variety of geometric patterns. All art forms are hand shaped, meaning specialized equipment used for producing spheres and eggs is not used.

Framed pieces are mosaics of patterns and designs that reflect the fanciful creations of the artist. The "Evolved Plant" series (refer to Figures 24 & 25) includes "Fruit", "Nuts", "Amphora", "Flower Tree", "Grapes", and "Mushrooms".

Sorry, we are still working on photography. There is nothing harder than to try to capture the in-depth colors through a highly reflective surface. Close-up photos of the outstanding spiderweb "plant" and the blue "fruit" in "Fruit" can be seen in the Gallery

SPECIMEN PIECES

A very natural form of dinosaur bone is the specimen piece. I carefully select esthetically pleasing shards and whole cross sections exhibiting detailed bone structure and balanced color patterns. Colors range from subtle earth tones to vibrant blues, greens and reds. A face of each specimen is shaped and polished to produce an attractive combination of natural and polished bone. Specimens are evaluated based on size, structural detail, and color definition.

No two pieces of bone are identical. I have found many that are similar, but for the most part, the size, structure, and color make each piece unique and individual. Specimens are excellent collectibles and make handsome additions to any desk. Holding and contemplating a specimen allows you to transcend Time itself. The Agatized Dinosaur Bone offered here has been collected from the Morrison Formation on the Colorado Plateau. This identifies it as Jurassic Age material, dating from 136,000,000 to 145,000,000 years old.

Pictures do not do this material justice!!

I do not currently have any photos of  the specimen pieces I have for sale. Please go to Gallery: Specimen to see some older material, some of which is for sale.
